-- Tiere & Jäger Februar 2004 Aus der Serie Meine Lieblingsplatte Heute: Ananda Shankar Sá-re-gá Machàn Reissue, orig. 1981, Indien I have composed the music for this LP keeping the number called Sa-re-ga Machan as the main theme. I have tried to create the atmosphere of twilight and the feeling of watching animals at a water-hole from a 'Machan' a raised platform on a tree. The listener can imagine animals coming to the water-holeone by one - starting with the small ones, followed by elephants and then, finally, the tiger. I have also tried to impart the feeling of falling leaves, the wind and the distant sounds of insects and animals. I am greatful to Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi for helping me to produce this album. Ananda Shankar hatte hierzulande schon lange einen legendären Ruf, allerdings beruhte dieser meist nur auf Hörensagen, waren seine Schallplatten doch seltene Raritäten, die wenigen Exemplare die es von Indien nach Europa verschlug wurden (und werden) zu horrenden Preisen gehandelt. Das ist aber kein Wunder, die unglaublich strange Mischung von traditioneller indischer Musik, ihren Rhythmen und Klängen mit westlicher Rock, Pop und Exoticamusik ist einmalig und großartig. Der Neffe Ravi Shankars und Sohn eines bekannten Tänzerehepaares studierte mehrere Jahre klassische Sitar, ließ sich dann aber auf diversen Reisen von westlichen Musikfornmen anregen, die er nach seiner Rückkehr nach Indien 1970 in seiner Musik verarbeitete. Ananda Shankar starb 2002. Diese auf 400 Stück limitierte und unautorisierte Wiederveröffentlichung gilt inzwischen selbst wieder als Rarität.
